THANKS TO
MR. CHARLES HATCH

The Class of 1988 gratefully recognizes the talents and
dedication of Mr. Charles Hatch for his years of service
f to the students of Framingham South High. As Head of

the Business Department, he has made a great impres-
sion on the lives of the students. Besides his almost
thirty years of teaching at South, he has also been a Phil-
omath advisor and a SMARC party organizer, we feel
honored to have known Mr. Hatch, and we wish him
many years of happiness to come.

FOR HIS YEARS OF DEDICATION

4

WELCOME!!!

DR. EUGENE THAYER

After the departure of Rigas Rigopolous, the Framing-
ham School department received a new
superintendent. Dr. Eugene Thayer, a graduate of both
the Boston College ana the Boston University Schools
of Education, holds a Doctoral degree in Public School
Administration from the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst. Because of his outstanding teaching record in
the Norwood Public School system, he earned the posi-
tion of Principal in an elementary school in the same
town. His experience over the past eight years as
Superintendent of the Lawrence School Department
made him an excellent choice for the position. Receiv-
ing an honorable discharge from the United States
Army, Dr. Thayer is a member of the Governor/
Superintendents' Task Force on Drug and Alcohol Edu-
cation. Both students and administration extend their
heartfelt welcome to Dr. Thayer, the new addition to
our South High family.

OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT

IN SINCERE APPRECIATION

After 30 years of devoted service, Vice Princ-
ipal Joyce III is retiring. He came to south as a
science teacher and became a Vice Principal
in 1964. under Mr. Joyce's friendly administra-
tion, the students felt welcomed and com-
fortable. He is known by the faculty as the
"Dean." Mr. Joyce's service at south will be
best remembered as truly thoughtful, and his
caring disposition accredits his being loved
by all. Good luck in the future, Mr. Joyce.

The students at Framingham South High
School regret saying goodbye to Christopher
Carahan after 27 years of devoted service.
Through this dedication, the class of 1988
would like to show its appreciation to one of
the most deserving members of the faculty.
He has gained the respect and high esteem of
all students, faculty, and administration.
Spending 21 years as a tennis coach, Mr. Car-
ahan is well loved. Thank you, Mr. Carahan,
you will be missed.

As Ricardo "Suds" Montalban
waved hello to Flyer Airlines
flight 88, yet another group
arrived on Fantasy Island. This
flight, though, was special
since on this February 26th
evening it carried the class of
1988 to their Senior Cotillion in
this lovely and exotic locale.
After crossing a bridge, the
seniors were treated to Vh
hours of food and dance as
they celebrated their quickly-
approaching graduation.

for helping Flyer sports to soar higher this
year.

Thumbs Down to the month of school
between the prom and the seniors' last day.

Thumbs Up to the introduction of a juice
machine and a school store to South. But . . .

Thumbs Down to the introduction of sixth

ference between them and the freshmen.

Thumbs Up to the "Sos" and his drama crew
for the past four years of entertaining plays
and musicals.

Thumbs Down to our head librarian for refus-
ing to pose for a yearbook photograph.

Thumbs Down to the departure of our
beloved vice-principal, Donald McCallion.

Thumbs Up to the vast number of trophies in

Thumbs Down to their not-too recent dates.

Thumbs Up and future prosperity to the

Thumbs up to the Debramath's slaves who,
under the direction of Debbie "The Curl" Le-

some noise in this year's tourneys.

Two Thumbs Up to Mr. Sudmyer for all

Looking back four years ago
To a time which seems so clear,
entered south High as one,
"Our beginning" . . . Freshman ye
Young as we were,
Naive we seemed,
Beginning alone,
In search of our dream.
The dream to succeed in life
And make relationships strong,
For friendship is life's most precious
An everlasting bond.
Now the time has come my friends
to shed that last tear . . .
To say our last goodbyes . . .
overcome our future fears.
We will leave with a smile shaped happily on
The memories of love can never be replaced.
Reality approaches,
Faster now it seems,

For the last four years that we have spent,
We shared that endless dream.

ful smile and an open heart, Jannike
Haug has quickly adapted to the
atmosphere and culture of America.
She is staying for the year with the
Nunes family as an exchange stu-
dent. Although our culture is very
different from her native Norway,
she has found the people here most
friendly and welcoming. Jannike will
be leaving at the end of the year but
her memory will long remain with
her friends at South.

This year South is fortunate to be able to welcome
Alberto Mastrofini, an Italian exchange student from
Pisa. Although he misses his family and his dog Snoopy,
Alberto has found a warm, supportive home here with
the Christofori family, whose son Larry is a junior at
South. Coming to America for a change of atmosphere
and a better understanding of English, Alberto has
greeted the American culture cheerfully. Since he has
been here, he has enjoyed skiing, soccer, classes,
and the many friends he has made here at south.
Ciao Alberto!

What can we say? After the deadlines, conflicts,
and endless hours, we made it! Thanks everyone.
We overcame our differences to work together and we
created a masterpiece! It seemed like an eternity
of work, but we got through it and we grew both from
hard work and from friendships gained. Once again,
we just want to say we appreciate it, and we hope
you are happy with all your accomplishments.

Hello, once again, everyone, Keith Jackson, LIVE, Sullivan
Stadium, Foxboro, Massachusetts, where the South High
Flyers will take on the Walpole Rebels. It's gonna be a
dandy . . .

Wait a sec. SULLIVAN STADIUM?! Yep. Due to a freak early
snow storm, the game at walpole was rescheduled at
Sullivan, but that was not the only highlight of 1987
Flyer Football. South at one point was 2 — 1 — 1 , and the
team was very competitive on all but one or two games.
To top it all off, the freshman team was undefeated! it
certainly was a dandy for captains Mike Joy, Ted Huddle-
son, and David Chyten. Head coach Jack Diatelevi is
ready to continue the resurgence of Flyer Football next
year.

A new state record for Tara Bolivar! Led by co-captain

watched the Flyer swim team struggled early but came
on late to win their last three meets. The Flyers hope to

On the line, gentlemen! Take your mark. . .set.. . BANC!
The Cross Country Team, led by captain and MVP Walter
Downing, suffered a devastating loss with a mid-season
ankle injury to Scott Relyea. Nevertheless, Coach Ed
Daniels is optimistically looking forward to next year's
season and the return of captain Cwil Jones, who holds
the course record time, and BSL All Star Jessica Binder.

The Flyer Field Hockey Team had a
rebuilding year in 1987. Along with
co-captains Cheryl Yarosz and
Michelle Merson. Coach Pamela
Jezukawicz led the young Flyer
team. One highlight of the year was
the outstanding play of BSL All Stars
Yarosz and Chris Pontremoli. Coach
Jez is highly optimistic about the
team for 1988.

Tom Selleck, that is ... ) Let's start
with South co-captains Karer
Sczepanik and Gail Trachtenberg
Both were voted BSL All Stars thi?

a birdy putt for the match . . . and . . . it's good! South
wins again!

Although the team suffered two late season close loses
that knocked them out of the tournament, the Flyer
Golf Team had a great season. Coach Bob Bell is highly
optimistic about next season.

The girls basketball team worked quite
hard throughout the season. Coach Del-

the Flyer team along with captains Jen
Armold and Janine Harwich. The emer-

Down for the Count

It's a war down there. Private. One-
on-one. High school wrestling
Strength — hard work — mental
toughness. The 1988 Flyer wrestling
team combined all of these traits for
a respectable season. The mats in
Flyerland were pinned again this
year with many victories as captain
Walter Downing led the South High
wrestlers to another fine year. The
members of the team, though
young, produced excellent per-
formances for coach wrin, who sees
a bright future for the team, in this
most demanding sport, the wres-
tlers certainly represented South
High admirably.

Since the reconstruction and re-
organization of the indoor track
team in 1985, it has been a long haul
for Coach Sposato and all the mem-
bers. After a very disappointing first
year, the team consisting of eight
dedicated runners, the South Flyers
began to improve and boast their
morale with the addition of several
more quality athletes. Although
they won only one meet, this year
has been the most rewarding be-
cause of the aspiring morale and de-
dication shown by all of the stu-
dents, especially captains Steve
Baden, Peter Falkowski, and Shelly
Williams.

Diving Into the Thick of Things

in spite of their meager numbers, the
1988 version of the Flyer Boys Swim
Team amassed a record of 4 wins and 5
losses. Captain Dave Holtz and MVP
captain Rich Tirrell led the team to a
fourth place finish at the league meet.
Among many fine performances was
Matt Cookes's 24.93, good enough for
a number three ranking in the league
at 50 yards. With nearly all members re-
turning next year, Coach Perriera ex-
pects to have another fine season.
